Las Caletas with kids

Las Caletas is one of the easiest family days in Puerto Vallarta: lunch is covered, there is a park for each age group and the cove is calm enough for life-jacketed swimmers. Here is what each age can do.

Many guests choose Las Caletas because of their children, and reviews from families are among the warmest. Some adults without children feel the day is too kid-focused, which tells you who it is built for.

The only planning needed is around ages, heights and walking. These are the rules listed for the cove's adventure areas.

The quick answer

Children 0 to 3 go free and children 4 to 11 pay a reduced rate. The Kids Adventure Park is for ages 4 to 11 with a minimum height of about 1 metre, and an adult must stay with them. Most Teen Adventure Cove activities need children aged 9 and up, at least 1.2 m (4 ft) tall; some slides are for ages 15 to 40 only. Life jackets are mandatory in the water.

Is Las Caletas good for kids?

Yes, especially for children aged about 4 to 12: there is a dedicated park for little ones, a water park for older kids and teens, and lunch and drinks are covered.

Parents in recent reviews mention children who loved the beach, the water and the activity zone, and one family with girls aged 9 and 10 named the zipline, the water slide and the banana boat as highlights. The flip side is that adults travelling without kids sometimes find the day too focused on families.

How much do children pay?

Children 0 to 3 are free, children 4 to 11 pay a reduced child rate, and anyone 12 and over pays the adult price.

The day is from $109 per adult on Viator, and the port fee (MX$40 in cash) and the $20 access fee are listed per person, so ask at check-in how they apply to your children. See the Las Caletas price guide for the full breakdown.

What is in the Kids Adventure Park?

A play area with climbing and adventure activities for ages 4 to 11 only, with a minimum height of 1 metre (3.25 ft); an adult must accompany each child.

It is included in the ticket. Plan to stay with younger children rather than drop them off, and save the beach and snorkelling for the morning, when the water is usually calmest.

What are the age and height limits in the Teen Adventure Cove?

Most activities need guests aged 9 and up, at least 1.2 m (4 ft) tall and under 118 kg (260 lb); two rides are for ages 15 to 40 only.

The Teen Adventure Cove is pitched at 12 and over, but the listed limits for the same cove are per ride. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult in the adventure park, and the operator describes the activities as physically demanding.

Do kids need to be able to swim?

No: life jackets are mandatory in all water activities, so non-swimmers can still kayak, paddleboard and snorkel close to an adult.

Some days the beach has waves, which is when the floating platforms and kayaks are the calmer option for small children. Keep little ones close on the rocks around the cove, which are wet and uneven.

How much walking is there, and can you bring a stroller?

More than many parents expect: the activity zones are a walk from the beach, and the operator describes the paths as sandy, uphill and irregular.

A stroller is of little use on sand and steps; a baby carrier is easier. Put the children in water shoes or strapped sandals: one parent wrote that the activity zone was a bit of a walk and flip-flops are not allowed on the zipline.

Know your must-dos? The day tour gives you about 4 hours on the cove to fit them in.

Will picky eaters find something at lunch?

Very likely: the sample buffet menu includes fried chicken, mac and cheese, buttered corn, rice and beans, plus brownies and chocolate chip cookies.

Adults get ceviche, grilled dorado with adobo sauce and BBQ ribs. The open bar serves soft drinks as well as cocktails. Lunch is served once, so a snack in your bag helps with younger children.
